Berber rugs are exceptional wool pieces, and at Decoecoart, we know how precious they are to you.
Here is the simple and proven method to preserve their softness, patterns, and natural beauty over time.
Express summary (keep handy)
Vacuum 1x/week, no rotating brush, low to medium power.
Flip the rug 1x/month, leave it upside down for a few hours.
Fresh stain: lukewarm water + white Marseille soap, no brush, rub gently with fingers, rinse, air dry (gentle sun, no prolonged exposure).
Deep dusting: hang it vertically and beat it (if possible).
Steam cleaning possible at medium power and from a distance.
Handling & placement
Handle your rug with care, avoid pulling on the fringes. Use a non-slip rug pad: it protects the fibers, improves grip, and aids ventilation.
Vacuuming (the safe method)
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times a week maximum.
- Attachment: no rotating brush (or brush retracted).
- Direction: with the pile (never aggressive).
Monthly rotation
Turn the rug every month and leave it upside down for a few hours: dust falls off naturally, and wear is balanced.
Stains: stress-free protocol
Act fast: Warm water + white Marseille soap (authentic).
No brush: massage gently with your fingers. Rinse with a slightly damp clean cloth.
Drying: flat, air dry. Gentle sun OK, but avoid prolonged exposure to prevent the wool from yellowing.
Tip: always test on a hidden area first.
"Old-fashioned" dusting
Ideally, hang the rug vertically and beat it vigorously. In an apartment: turn it over for a few hours to let the dust fall out, then vacuum.
Steam cleaner (optional)
It is possible if:
- Medium power, no direct contact, quick movements.
- Avoid on greasy stains (prefer soap).
- Let it dry completely afterwards.
Errors to avoid
Aggressive rotating brushes, boiling water, chlorine/solvent-based stain removers, vigorous scrubbing, complete soaking, drying too long in direct sunlight.
Odors & gentle care
Baking soda: sprinkle, let act for 2–3 hours, vacuum.
Regular airing of rooms = healthier wool.
Storage
Roll (do not fold), fringes facing inward, breathable cover, in a dry place away from light.
